BOUNTIFUL — An avalanche reportedly trapped a snowmobiler in the backcountry near the Salt Lake and Davis County lines Friday afternoon.
The condition of the man, who was reportedly dug out by friends, was unknown as of 2:45 p.m.
Davis County Sheriff's Lt. Brad Wilcox said the slide happened near Grandview Peak. Other snowmobilers and a helicopter crew from Wasatch Powder Birds reportedly helped dig the man out.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
In the past week, two backcountry skiers were killed in avalanches near Snowbasin and Solitude ski resorts. The Utah Avalanche Forecast Center called the threat level for slides on Friday "considerable" and issued a special avalanche advisory.
"Unusually dangerous conditions exist (Friday) and through the weekend for most of the mountains in Utah. Many slopes lie hanging in the balance waiting for a trigger, such as the weight of a person or snowmobile. These avalanches will be unusually large and mostly unsurvivable," the center said on its Web site.
