Moving McAllister
Film review
MOVING MCALLISTER — ★ — Mila Kunis, Ben Gourley, Jon Heder, Rutger Hauer, Patrika Darbo, Mary Pat Gleason, Cathrine Grace, William Mapother, Hubbel Palmer, Zack Ward; rated PG-13 (violence, vulgarity, brief sex, drug use)
The most recent crop of locally produced LDS-centric movies hasn't been very good, but at least the films have all been pretty much free of the crude and vulgar material so prevalent in most of their cinematic competition.Which makes "Moving McAllister" the unfortunate exception.
While this smarmy low-brow romantic comedy is free of any LDS references, it does come from most of the same people as 2003's "Pride and Prejudice: A Latter-Day Comedy." But fans of that film may be shocked to see a follow-up that features so much in way of sexual and drug humor. And absolutely nothing that is funny.
The McAllister of the title is Maxwell McAllister (Rutger Hauer), the head of a successful Miami law firm. He's a legend in the industry and is idolized by Rick Robinson (Ben Gourley), an intern who works for him.
Rick is preparing to take the bar exam in just a few days but he gets sidetracked when his boss asks him for a favor. He wants Rick to help move his niece, Michelle (Mila Kunis), to Los Angeles. And he makes it clear to Rick that there is to be no hanky-panky.
That's fine with Rick, who just wants to make a quick trip and then get back to his studies. But as fate would have it, he's about to have encounters with an oddball hitchhiker (Jon Heder), hillbilly swingers and others. And, of course, he starts to fall for the free-spirited Michelle.
Gourley, who also wrote the script, is awful as the wide-eyed innocent. And Kunis (TV's "That '70s Show") is more annoying than alluring.
Also, it's about time to say that Heder's 15 minutes of fame have run out. He's simply regurgitating the same one-note, doofus shtick he's been milking since "Napoleon Dynamite," and it's gotten tiresome.
"Moving McAllister" is rated PG-13 for crude sexual references and humor, as well as some scatological references, supposedly comic violence (vehicular and some brawling), drug content and references (hallucinogens), and some brief sexual contact. Running time: 90 minutes.
