Redford the director also nicely handles the ghastly animal-vehicle collision that sets up the film, with quick cuts that tell the tale without being as graphic as the novel's descriptions.
He also knows the limitations of Redford the actor. His performance nicely displays the customary low-key charm that fans have come to expect. And Thomas is as superb as ever, revealing vulnerability beneath what initially appears to be an icy facade.
Kudos also to Johansson, who avoids becoming shrill or whiny in what is a very difficult role, as well as the strong supporting cast, which includes the great character actors Neill, Dianne Wiest and Chris Cooper.
Actually, the real star may be the majestic Big Sky Country. The Montana locations are vividly photographed by Robert Richardson, a frequent Oliver Stone collaborator.
"The Horse Whisperer" is rated PG-13 for profanity, violent horse training and brief glimpses of the gruesome animal-vehicle collision, and some gory animal makeup effects.
