An off-duty female Salt Lake police officer was injured in a domestic violence attack Wednesday. The officer's estranged boyfriend was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident began about 9 a.m. when the boyfriend, 35, broke into the officer's home and assaulted her, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak. The couple used to live in the house together and had children in common, he said.
Since she became estranged from her boyfriend, however, the man did not live in the house, and the officer had the locks on the doors changed.
The officer left the house with her children after the attack and went to an area hospital to be treated for her injuries, Jaroscak said.
At 12:20 p.m., other officers went back to the woman's house. As they entered the residence they heard a single gunshot. They found him dead in an upstairs bathroom, he said.
Salt Lake police asked the county to handle the investigation.
