Do you suspect that you may be losing energy from your home? The chances are good, especially with spring finally here.
Windows and chimneys can be trouble spots. Rescue Rooter of Salt Lake City provided the following tips for keeping homes cooler during warm weather.
• Have screens in all windows and doors. The screens should be clean and free of any holes that would allow insects inside. In the absence of air conditioning, open windows with screens can allow air to flow throughout the home.
• Put blinds on windows that face the south and west. Open windows once the sun has set and close them before sunrise to keep a home without air conditioning cooler.
• Check the sealant around exterior windows and doors. Weather-stripping or caulking that has deteriorated can let cool air escape. Winter weather can damage the seal and cause your air-conditioning unit to work harder than necessary. That adds up to higher energy costs.
• Get a professional to inspect the chimney flue and cap for cracks and leaking.
• Have your chimney cleaned if it has been used during the winter. This will prevent spring and summer moisture from creating a smoky smell.
• Be sure to remove old logs and ashes from your fireplace to avoid smelling them until you get ready for a fire next season.
You can also save energy if you take a vacation. Turn down the temperature of your water heater and turn up the temperature of your refrigerator.
If you make your refrigerator a little warmer, though, be sure to remove highly perishable foods, such as dairy products, produce and meat. Other perishable items, such as condiments, will remain edible on the lower settings.
Another possible trouble spot in your home is your washing machine. A failure in the hose can cause costly damage. Prevent that by:
• Checking your washing machine hoses for bulges, cracks or leaks.
• Moving your machine at least 4 inches from the wall so that the hose won't kink.
• Never leaving your machine running when you leave home.
• Replacing your hose about every three years, even if it looks like it's OK.
