The authors opine that the origins of straw bale construction were probably very simple: "Farmers in cold climates stacked bales of straw to line the walls of wood or rock barns."

Since the early 1990s, homeowners, builders and architects have utilized straw bales at an increasing rate; more and more municipalities are including the construction technique in their codes.

One interesting bit of information gleaned from this section of the book is that straw should not be confused with hay, which is herbage for cattle. Straw is what's left over after rice, rye, barley, wheat and other grains are harvested. It's indigestible and tough.

The last alternative method for building a home is reinvented, recycled and high-tech materials; this section will fascinate readers, as the suggested materials for use are so unique as to be mind-boggling.

"Living Homes" will expand your vision as to what it means to be "green" and how acceptable and exciting the homes built with these alternative methods can be.
