Dining out

You can get Icees at a bunch of convenience stores around the valley, and also at Burger King, which is convenient for me because one of my other "nasty-good" favorites is the two-for-a-dollar tacos they serve there. There's no way that these should be anybody's favorite: they're premade, so a worker just heats them up, opens the top of the taco and stuffs in lettuce and cheese — the same cheese that's on the burgers. Then each one is slathered with lip-tingling hot sauce.

The meat is mushy. The lettuce is iceberg, and not thin-sliced like I usually like it on tacos. And the cheese is American, for goodness' sake! That hardly qualifies as cheese at all. But I love 'em. They're crunchy and chewy, and the hot sauce is delicious. And they cost a dollar for two! Pair that with an Icee, and I'm a happy woman.

So, now you know my secret: Though I enjoy fine cooking as much as the next girl, I have a big spot in my heart for food at the opposite end of the spectrum: sugar-sprinkled chocolate-chip cookies at Peruvian Park Elementary School. Grandma Sycamore white bread. Cougar dogs at Lavell Edwards Stadium. Li'l Angels, pink-tinted, cream-filled angel-food cakes that I've loved my whole life, a Hostess product that is alarmingly hard to find these days. (I think a gas station in Grantsville still carries 'em).

And I bet I'm not the only one, right? What are your guilty pleasures when eating out? I'm not talking about things like, "I get the Asian salad at McDonald's, which is really good considering where I bought it." (That's true, by the way). I'm talking about stuff that's usually not too good for you, that's about a galaxy away from gourmet, but that you like anyway. Write to me at the e-mail address below and I'll share some of your own "nasty-good" recommendations in a future column.
