Before the stories die and memories fade away, it should be noted that Kennecott won this month's trifecta of corporate irresponsibility with (1) disclosure of the cover-up of the Magna tailings pond dam, a tragedy narrowly averted; (2) the filing of mineral claims at the Rose Canyon Ranch only hours before Salt Lake County purchased the ranch for public open space, potentially jeopardizing that open space and its ecological values; and (3) finalizing of the Kennecott ground water "pump and dump" scheme to put groundwater it contaminated into a vulnerable tailings pond and into the Great Salt Lake.
In light of these fine messes, Kennecott's offer to pay for an independent study smacks more of hush money than upstanding corporate citizenship.
