Early last year, UTA began studying whether to move a segment of the proposed airport TRAX line from 400 West to 600 West, creating a direct connection with the intermodal hub and reducing construction costs by as much as $35 million.

The 600 West alignment had been preferred by transit planners, but UTA no longer is taking sides.

"At this point, we will completely support whatever decision the city makes," said UTA spokeswoman Carrie Bohnsack-Ware. "There are pros and cons to both (alignments). UTA can live with either alignment very well."

Carlton Christensen, vice chairman of the City Council, said he believes that the majority of the council is committed to the 400 West alignment.

Even though the interlocal agreement states that the alignment can remain open until the end of the year, the City Council likely will vote next week on legislation to make its intent for the route clear, Christensen said.

"Having said that, it's probably not going to be a unanimous vote," he said.

Sandberg said she's "hopeful" that members of the City Council who have favored the 400 West alignment will continue to do so despite Garrott's call for more discussion.
