Two people were charged Friday in 3rd District Court with homicide and a third person with aggravated burglary following arrests made in connection with the shooting death of Julio Balderrama. Balderrama was found dead in his Salt Lake apartment on April 18.
Juan Anthony Padilla, 21, of Midvale and Arthur V. Spencer, 19, of West Valley City were each charged with first-degree homicide, aggravated burglary and obstruction of justice, while an alleged accomplice, Carissa A. Hyde, 20, of West Jordan, was charged with aggravated burglary and obstruction.
Statements in court documents from the victim's adult daughter, April Balderrama, who was present at the time of the shooting, indicate that her father was shot while fighting with Spencer and Padilla, one of whom was armed with a gun and the other, a baseball bat. After the shooting, Balderrama said the two male defendants demanded drugs and money and were given "a small cooler which contained the marijuana," after which they fled.
Padilla told police that he and Spencer "disposed of a small cooler, the gun and the baseball bat" in a trash bin near the crime scene.
