The Utah Department of Transportation is looking to add a high occupancy vehicle (carpool) lane to Interstate 15 in Davis and Weber counties.
UDOT officials told the Transportation Commission Friday that a committee is looking at the HOV lane to help decrease congestion problems. A formal recommendation from the committee is expected in six weeks.
John Njord, UDOT executive director, said it would be a good idea to consider extending the HOV lane. He said it was important to have an express lane from Ogden to Provo. The HOV lane currently extends from approximately 400 North in Salt Lake City to University Parkway in Orem.
Part of the recommendation will include whether it would be feasible to create another lane to accommodate car pooling. The alternative would be taking away one of the normal traveling lanes for an express lane, which wouldn't alleviate congestion, he said.
