Area youth team posts solid showing

The 16-year-old Utah Pump-N-Run boys basketball team was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Kingwood Classic in Houston on Sunday. UPNR lost 52-49 in overtime to Pro Skills Elite from Dallas on a last-second, half-court shot.

The Utah team was led in scoring by Shad Sommerville (Bingham) with 20 points and Nicholas Paulos (Olympus) with nine.

There were 127 16-year-old teams from around the U.S. participating in the tournament.

Other members of the Utah team included Connor Brady (Olympus), Jordan Brown (Alta), BJ Caver (Copper Hills), Ben Clifford (Bingham), Peter Howey (Woods Cross), Joe Kruger (Timpanogas), Steven Larson (Copper Hills), Nate Levine (West) and Will Watkins (Olympus).

The team's coaches are Brandon & George Sluga.

On Saturday, the Pump-N-Run squad moved into the round of 16 in the tournament with a 61-42 victory over the Georgia Blazers. The team was led by Watkins with 16 points and Sommerville with 11.

Pump-N-Run won its first-round game in the tourney when it defeated Texas Swoosh, a team from Houston, 64-58. Clifford had 20 points and seven rebounds, Brady added 14 points and seven rebounds, and Brown had 12 points and six steals in the victory.
