A 26-year-old man was killed in a motorcycle accident in Logan Canyon Tuesday night.

Just after 7 p.m. a man on a motorcycle in Logan Canyon went into the oncoming lane of traffic for an unknown reason, and was hit head-on by a pickup truck hauling a front end loader.

The truck's driver attempted to brake, but could not avoid hitting the motorcycle rider. Jacob Vernon Merrill, who was wearing a helmet, was killed on impact, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cameron Roden.

The motorcycle caught fire after the collision.

Investigators were looking Tuesday at whether speeding was a factor in the crash.

Merrill had addresses listed for both Idaho and Logan, Roden said, meaning he may have been a student at Utah State University.
