It's an amazing time of year for sports

You usually don't think about the second week in April being the ultimate sports week of the year, but it's amazing to think of all the different sports that are being packed in this time of year.

Let's see, we had baseball, college football, indoor football, college basketball, pro basketball, pro hockey, college hockey, soccer, gymnastics, golf, tennis, car racing, volleyball and track and field all contested over the weekend.

No wonder we had a 20-page sports section yesterday.

On a local basis alone, just about everything you can think of was played over the weekend.

• The Salt Lake Bees had their home opener Friday night, drawing their second-largest opening-day crowd ever, and games Saturday and Sunday.

• Real Salt Lake soccer team had a real good result for a change as RSL crushed D.C. United by a score of 4-0 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

• The University of Utah women's gymnastics team qualified for nationals for the 33rd straight year by finishing first in Saturday night's regional in Minneapolis. Next up are the nationals next week in Georgia.

• The two-time defending MWC champion BYU football team concluded its spring drills with a scrimmage among its second and third-teamers, which attracted an impressive crowd of more than 16,000.

• The Utah Grizzlies hockey team opened the playoffs last night in Fresno and will continue tonight with the first home playoff game on Wednesday night.

• The Utah Jazz blew out Denver Saturday night to keep their slim Western Conference title hopes alive.

• In the bad news category, the Utah Blaze indoor football team scored a bunch of points again — 62 — but still lost by 17 points to the Los Angeles Avengers Saturday night to fall to 0-7.

• We also had the Utah High School Track Coaches Invitational and a BYU men's volleyball title-clinching victory over USC on Saturday.

If there wasn't enough going on locally the last few days, check out the national scene.

• At the top of the list is the Masters, arguably the most interesting golf tournament of the year and the one most casual fans pay the most attention to. Although it got a bit shaky toward the end, that was quite a performance by winner Trevor Immelman (try saying Trevor Immelman five times quickly).

• We had our first Red Sox-Yankees series of the year over the weekend with another coming up this week.
