KEARNS An unattended stove set a house on fire that resulted in nearly $80,000 in damage Saturday afternoon.
Just after 12 p.m., firefighters responded to the home, at 5967 S. Brass Drive (6000 West). They were able to contain the blaze before the home was a total loss, but smoke and water caused extensive damage, according to Ben Sharer, spokesman for the Unified Fire Authority.
The owner was heating oil on his stove and left it unattended, Sharer said. He didn't have smoke detectors in his home and had no warning that a fire had started.
"This is a great reminder of how important it is to check the batteries in your smoke detector," he said.
No one was injured in the fire. The man, along with his dog and cat, were able to make it outside of the home safely.
