• Winner: Salt Lake County is spending about $1 million to equip its public pools with an ultraviolet light system to help in the fight against harmful bacteria. Last year, an outbreak of cryptosporidium led to a ban on young swimmers for a time.
The new technology will provide some peace of mind. Even more peace will come if parents insist on making very young swimmers wear swim diapers.• Loser: If it's spring, it must be time for juveniles to do stupid things. Police in various parts of Utah are dealing with dumb pranks and vandalism. In Ogden, about 25 cars ended up with smashed windows overnight last week. Police already have arrested six teenage girls for a similar crime there. In Roosevelt, someone broke the window in a patrol car and stole the dummy police had put in it to scare motorists into slowing down. Next time, maybe police could embed a Web cam or GPS device in the dummy to facilitate a rescue.
• Winner: Local Boy Scouts collected more than a half-million pounds of food last weekend for the Utah Food Bank Services. What a testament to the value of Scouting and the generosity of people in the Beehive State.
