Miley Cyrus to headline Stadium of Fire
Teen pop superstar Miley Cyrus, the star of Disney's "Hannah Montana," is rolling into town on the Fourth of July to headline Stadium of Fire, the main event of America's Freedom Festival at Provo.
The 15-year-old winner of Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards for "Best Female Actress" and "Best Female Singer" made an appearance via video to make the announcement herself.
"We're gonna set the place on fire, all right," she said. "I'm excited to be there."
America's Freedom Foundation senior executive producer Brad Pelo said show organizers don't expect tickets to last very long.
Cyrus recently performed at Reliant Stadium in Houston on March 9 and the stadium's 72,000 tickets disappeared in a matter of minutes.
"Get your ticket now," he advised parents. "Don't wait."
Pelo also announced that the Blue Man Group will perform at Stadium of Fire. He said it's an unusual move for the group because the group hasn't performed in a stadium environment.
"I think it will be interesting to see what they bring to an Independence Day celebration," he said.
Talk show host Glenn Beck will be the event's emcee.
Less than a month ago, organizers of the festival hadn't been able to lock in a main act for this year's Stadium of Fire.
Paul Warner, the festival's executive director, on March 4 told the Provo City Council that a high-profile talent had turned down an invitation to perform at Stadium of Fire.
Over the past few years, booking a main attraction for Stadium of Fire has been tough, Warner said. Last year, country music's dynamic duo, Brooks and Dunn, wasn't announced as the headliner until early March.
The previous year, tickets went on sale for the Stadium of Fire long before concertgoers or concert organizers, for that matter knew who would be performing the main event.
Only a month before the show did festival organizers announce they booked then newly crowned "American Idol" winner Taylor Hicks.
That year ticket sales were significantly impacted, Warner said, and he understands why. "People want to know who their headliner is when they buy tickets," he said.
Compare that with 2004. When news broke that Reba McEntire hailed as the first lady of country music was on her way to Provo the concert quickly sold out.
Tickets for this year's Stadium of Fire at LaVell Edwards Stadium will go on sale April 4 at 5 p.m., Pelo said. They will be available at www.byutickets.com.
For those who worry about Internet scams, Pelo said people can go to the Marriott Center, starting today, to get wristbands for a chance to buy tickets in person.
He emphasized the wristband does not guarantee a ticket, only a place in line if you are at the Marriott Center at 4:30 p.m. on April 4.
He said there's a limit of 25 tickets per customer.
