I read the Deseret Morning News article about Utah's new Grand Master of Masons, Glen Cook, becoming the first Mormon in many decades to be elevated to preside over the Utah Grand Lodge (March 29). Being a Mason myself (and LDS, as well), I extend my congratulations and wish him well.
As the article pointed out: Joseph Smith Jr., Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, Heber C. Kimball, and many, many LDS pioneers were Masons. Their leadership skills were enhanced by their membership in the Masonic fraternity.
Hyrum Smith was the incumbent Master (presiding officer) of the local lodge in Nauvoo, Ill., at the time of his death. I have visited the Masonic Hall/Cultural Hall in Nauvoo, and it is my sincere hope that a new Masonic Lodge will receive a charter to hold meetings in that historic room on the third floor of that building.
I attest that membership is compatible with the LDS Church.
