Utah Utes baseball: Fife tosses one-hit shutout as Utes slap Falcons
Utah hurler Stephen Fife went the distance in tossing a one-hit shutout. The 6-foot-3 righty struck out eight with just one walk. It's the first complete-game effort by the Utes (9-12, 2-2 Mountain West) this season.
"Stephen went after them today," said coach Bill Kinneberg. "They made contact on him early in the ball game, but his breaking ball kept them on their heels, especially from the sixth inning on.
"His curve ball was changing directions on the batters, and that what we want to see. Fife's breaking ball was as good as it's been all year."
Fife's lone base knock came in fourth inning when K.J. Randhawa hit a ball up the middle.
Utah smacked out 13 hits in the victory today. Cody Guymon led the Utes' offensive charge, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Dustin Hennis and Michael Beltran were both 2-for-4, and Hennis had two RBIs. Jesse Shriner also had two RBIs.
"This was some exciting baseball today to say the least," head coach David Eldredge said after the game.
Both squads will be back for another doubleheader today starting at noon.
ORAL ROBERTS 16, BYU 1: At Tulsa, Okla., Oral Roberts scored 10 runs in the third inning on its way to a rout of the Cougars.
Brian Van Kirk hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run shot in the third for ORU. Southpaw Michael Jarman threw a no-hit shutout through five-plus innings.
