South Salt Lake police arrest man in stabbing incident
A 28-year-old man was arrested Wednesday afternoon during a traffic stop in Centerville, South Salt Lake police said.
The victim, 28, who did not initially cooperate with detectives, was stabbed outside an emissions/vehicle inspection garage near 3000 S. State just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The man claimed he was in a car with an acquaintance he only knew by his street name. The victim wanted the acquaintance to drive him to Centerville but he refused, said South Salt Lake police detective Gary Keller. They got into a fight and the victim was stabbed in both arms. One of the injuries left a deep cut that resulted in a lot of bleeding, he said.
The victim was taken to a local hospital. Police say his injuries were not life threatening.
When investigators first questioned the victim, however, he didn't want to press any charges and had little information, or very questionable information, about the acquaintance and the vehicle he used to drive away, Keller said. More questions were raised about the validity of the victim's man's story when he pointed to the area where he was allegedly stabbed, but there was no blood, Keller said.
Police do believe he was attacked because he was stabbed in the back of the arm, Keller said.
The victim gave police a possible address for the acquaintance in Centerville, and officers staked out the home Wednesday, police said. During a traffic stop, police arrested the man on suspicion of aggravated assault and aggravated burglary. A passenger in the car was also arrested on an unrelated drug offense.
