OREM — Utah Valley State College art students display their work in the annual Student Show '08 at the Woodbury Art Museum beginning tonight.

An opening reception begins at 6 at the museum on the second floor of the University Mall, 575 E. University Parkway, between Nordstrom and The Gap. The exhibition runs through April 19. Hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

UVSC art faculty selected the works mostly from students taking art and visual communications classes the past two semesters concentrating on graphic design, illustration, photography, painting and drawing and sculpture. However, at least two students who entered pieces are majoring in other fields.

The exhibition is for students, regardless of major, museum registrar Robin DeSpain said. More than 230 pieces were entered in the highly competitive show, but the art faculty eliminated nearly half, she said.

"The selected works are thought to be excellent examples of student work," she said.

DeSpain said she has watched students grow from beginners to professional-level artists. Among them is Tammy Rodeback, a sculptor, soon to graduate. She entered a horse hair vase titled "Golden Hair."

"She does consistent good work," DeSpain said.

Other student artists who are exhibiting include Jann Nielsen and Josie Bell.

"What we love about this exhibit is that it showcases what is going on on campus," DeSpain said.
