PROVO Brigham Young University is implementing an animation center, BYU officials announced during a special event on campus Thursday.
Brent Adams, faculty member in the BYU School of Technology, will serve as the animation center director.
"It's an honor. It's a challenge. We're very excited about the potential," Adams said, in an interview with the Desert Morning News on Thursday.
Adams said they will be hiring some additional faculty and revamp the animation curriculum. "We are in discussions with the studios to figure out what that curriculum should look like," he said. "And we are going to try and create opportunities for more students on campus to be involved with what we're doing."
The animation center will be housed within the Fulton College of Engineering and Technology. The animation major will remain within the College of Fine arts and Communications.
BYU's animation program was created in fall 2001.
The films produced by each graduating class have been shown at some of the world's most prestigious festivals and garnered high-level awards and recognition from important competitions and organizations such as the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
