Riverton rolls over T-Wolves
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Riverton held only a 5-3 lead, but by the time their half of the inning was over, they found themselves up 12-3, scoring seven runs on a two-out rally.
"One thing we've tried to work on is never stopping no matter how many outs or strikes we have against us," said Riverton coach Emily Cederholm about her team's fifth inning performance.
"We tell our batters to try to trade places with the runner in that (a two-out) situation, and this is the first time we've been successful," said Cederholm, whose team is now 9-1.
Symbree Minniear starting things by sending the ball over the fence in the first inning for a two-run home run, came on strong again in the fifth, getting herself on base with a single. The next two Riverton batters scored outs and left Minniear on second. But then the Riverton team really found its bats.
Minniear day included a home run, two singles, three RBIs and a pair of runs in her outing for the Silverwolves. Gomez wasn't to be outdone by much, adding a double, a single and three RBIs of her own to the effort. Kelsi Hoopiiaina picked up a triple in the first inning and scored four runs in the game, and King added a pair of singles to her double for her own three-hit contest.
Sandi Bowles also got into the action with a pair of singles, and nine Riverton batters scored hits.
The Riverton seventh was almost as impressive as the fifth as the first five batters scored, each reaching base on a walk or an error, while King, Jordan Taylor, and Thomas each ripped singles into center field to finish off the scoring.
"We are being successful, but we still have a lot of work to do, and these girls are still willing to learn," said Cederholm, who has played some tough competition this season en route to her team's 9-1 record.
"Timpanogos almost knocked us out of the state tournament last year, so that's why I wanted to play them this year," Cederholm added as she remembered her team's seventh inning comeback over the Timberwolves at the tourney.
Timpanogos picked up three of its runs in the bottom of the second on four free bases and a single by Angie Larsen. Kelsey Belliston added an RBI on a sacrifice fly in that inning to finish it off. The T-Wolves scored a run while stranding three in the bottom of the sixth with a single by Alyssa Richins, a double by Jessica Rivers, a bunt single by Kendra Martin and another RBI to Belliston on a sacrifice ground out.
