KAYSVILLE No one knows how to better protect a home track than Davis. The Darts traditionally welcome some of the state's best teams to compete in their annual super meet, but usually reserve the top spot for themselves.
Nothing from that scenario changed on Tuesday afternoon. For the fifth straight spring, the Davis girls topped the field at the Davis Super Meet. The Darts scored 191 points and finished 102 points ahead of runner-up Viewmont.
Like many teams, Davis came into the meet simply looking to work out a few early season kinks, but it didn't take much for the Darts to put on a strong showing.
"We felt like whatever we get out of today would be good," Davis coach Corbin Talley said. "But we're seeing some good state-qualifying marks and some good early season marks for sure."
Chief among those chipping in good marks was Candace Eddy. The junior broke a meet record in the 3200 meters after finishing in 11 minutes, 17.18 seconds.
Not bad for someone who originally contemplated sitting out the race, so she could focus exclusively on the 1600 an event she won as well with a time of 5:0 2.14.
"I'm actually really satisfied with that two-mile because I didn't know what to expect today," Eddy said.
The 3200 seemed tailor-made for Davis with Eddy's teammates claiming second through fifth place. All four relays went much the same way with the Darts winning the 400, 1600, 3200 and medley by wide margins.
Taylorsville sprinter Dominque Thompson dominated in the short distances. The sophomore won the 100 meters with a time of 12.63 seconds and also finished atop the 200 after finishing in 25.89 seconds.
Thompson felt a little disappointed with her 100 time, however, because she ran a 12.2 in her previous meet and had hoped to inch closer to her goal of 11.8 seconds on Tuesday.<
"It wasn't my best race," Thompson said. "My start I didn't like very much."
Viewmont high jumper Ada Robinson also set a new record at the meet. Robinson, a senior, cleared 5-feet-8 inches topping ex-Davis jumper Jenn Schiess by three inches and equaling a personal record.
"Since I was a freshman, I haven't gotten over 5-foot-8," Robinson said. "It's exciting to get up there on the second meet because that means I can go higher throughout the year."
Bountiful claimed the most individual titles in the field events. Nicole Knighton won the shot put with a throw of 42 feet and 8.5 inches. Makira Kuan jumped 16 feet 2 inches to claim the long jump crown.
The Davis Super Meet concludes this afternoon with boys team competition.
