Teachers write a proposal and how desired materials will be used in school. DonorsChoose vets each proposal before posting. Potential donors can search the site by state, ZIP code, topic or price, and give to projects they like. DonorsChoose buys the materials and ships them to the classroom. Donors receive letters and pictures from students about how they've used the gift.
Since it opened to all states last September, DonorsChoose.org has brought in $100,000 for 220 Utah teachers' projects, impacting more than 7,500 students, the company reports.
"DonorsChoose.org is a Web site where we can all be philanthropists," Spencer F. Eccles, chairman and CEO of the George S. and Dolores Dore' Eccles Foundation, a DonorsChoose supporter, said in a prepared statement. "People in this state truly want to make a difference ... and when we can go online and directly help a classroom full of kids, it's a 'win-win' for everyone."
