Monday, Monday — can't trust that workday

I attend two meetings every day here at the News, at 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They always last at least 30 minutes and sometimes drag on for 45 minutes or more. Though I know they serve a purpose, I can't honestly say they're always completely productive.

But enough of my whining. At least for now.

Messmer said Tuesday is the most productive workday for a couple of reasons. "Many view Tuesday as an opportunity to focus their efforts and establish momentum for the rest of the week," he said.

I never seem to gain momentum, on Tuesday or any other day. Like many of you, I usually feel like I'm swimming as fast as I can just to keep my head above water.

So I paid attention when reading Accountemps' advice for maintaining high productivity throughout the week, such as:

• Make a plan. Map out your day before it begins and prioritize tasks.

• Sharpen your focus. Try to cluster tasks that require similar effort.

• Limit distractions. In other words, try not to check your e-mail every time a new message arrives.

• Don't delay. Don't put off working on overwhelming assignments. Instead, break such projects into smaller, more manageable tasks.

• Recharge. Take short breaks during the day to replenish your energy and fight fatigue.

I especially like that last bit of advice. And that's why I think the News should provide an endless supply of doughnuts in the break room. I'm sure that would make me more productive on Monday, Tuesday and every other day.

Hey, a guy can dream, right?
