PROVO The Brigham Young University track and field team finished indoor nationals this past weekend with seven All-Americans between both the men's and women's teams.
The women got their four from the distance medley relay team that took fifth place. The men notched three individual All-American honors and finished in 26th place as a team.
"It went pretty well. We had hoped to score a few more points, but we did about where we thought," said head coach Mark Robinson. "We hoped our pole vault would score a few more points, but they didn't end up getting where they had hoped."
Pole vaulter Matt Weirich finished in seventh place, Keith Jensen finished seventh in the 800 meters and junior Kyle Perry finished in third place in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8 minutes 2.63 seconds.
"(Jensen) was seventh in the 800, and that was phenomenal," said Robinson. "(Perry) was third, which was what he was ranked this year, and he was real close to getting second place. But overall, if we got a few more points, we would have moved up about 10 spots."
With the indoor season behind them, the Cougars will now quickly switch their focus to outdoor events. They open the outdoor season this weekend, but those who competed in nationals will take a few weeks to get ready.
"It has been a good indoor year, but we will be a much better outdoor than we were indoor," said Robinson. "There are more events, and our depth will help us a lot more outdoors than indoors. It makes a difference in the outdoor season."
WOMEN'S GOLF: The BYU women's golf team fought its way from behind to finish in a tie for first place with Washington State at the UNLV Spring Invitational.
Eighteen schools were represented in the three-day tournament, and the Cougars were led by freshman Jade Bollinger, who had a career-high by shooting under par each round and finishing with a 71-71-70 212.
MEN'S TENNIS: The Cougars swept a doubleheader again this past weekend, as they beat Pacific and Portland 5-2 and 6-1, respectively. The Cougars are now 10-5 on the season and are still undefeated at home.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: BYU took part in several upsets on the way to beating No. 33 South Carolina 5-1 last weekend. The Cougars (8-6) got perhaps the biggest upset when Anastasia Surkova and Jennifer Miccoli clinched the doubles point by beating the No. 19-ranked duo of Gira Schofield and Ana Zubori.
RUGBY: BYU trounced UVSC this weekend by a score of 37-3. The Cougars now boast an 8-3 record on the season.
