Salt Lake County now is ranked No. 38 out of 100 on a list of the nation's largest counties.
Los Angeles County is the nation's most populous county with 9.9 million people, although it lost about 2,000 residents from 2006. Maricopa County, Ariz., home to Phoenix, was the top numerical gainer, increasing by 102,000 people between 2006 and 2007.
During 2006 and 2007, 70 of the 100 fastest-growing counties were in the South, with 22 in the West and eight in the Midwest. The fastest growing county was Kendall, Ill., with a population growth of 77.5 percent from April 1, 2000, to July 1, 2007. Rounding out the top 10 were Flagler, Fla.; Rockwall, Texas; Pinal, Ariz.; Loudoun, Va.; Forsyth, Ga.; Paulding, Ga.; Lincoln, S.D.; Henry, Ga.; and Newton, Ga.
