'Silent Movie Night' set at BYU

KBYU radio (FM-89.1) has scheduled a "Silent Movie Night" in the de Jong Concert Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University.

KUER radio at the University of Utah held a similar event last fall, and now it's KBYU's turn.

The event's focus will be a screening of the silent movie classic "The General," with Buster Keaton, accompanied by theater organist Mike Ohman.

"The General" is regarded as one of the best silent comedies ever made (and Keaton's favorite as well) and it is filled with hilarious sight gags and perfectly timed stunts.

The evening also includes pre-movie entertainment and an audience sing-along.

The audience is invited enter the "Classical 89 Costume Contest." Entrants should meet at 7 p.m. in the south lobby of the de Jong Concert Hall for the judging.

Tickets, are $10 ($3 off with BYU or student ID) and may be purchased at the Harris Fine Arts Center Ticket Office or by calling 801-422-4322. There is also a two-for-one admission with KBYU Membercard.

RADIO HAPPENINGS — "Johnson and Johnson" on KUBL will hold their ninth annual "Green Jell-O Jump" Monday, 11 a.m., at the Mayan restaurant at Jordan Commons. Twenty contestants will dive into 300 gallons of Green Jell-O seeking cash and prizes. Grand prize is a trip to the Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas.

KUBL didn't really "go away," despite an announcement on the station last Friday. It ended up being an early April Fool's-type promotion to promote the Rascal Flatts' concert that night in Salt Lake City.

KCPW fans held a rally Tuesday at Library Square to show support for the station's current format. The station's owner, Community Wireless of Park City, is selling it, and there are fears the station's format could change substantially, depending on who is allowed to purchases it.

KRSP is promoting "Mexico Madness," a chance for listeners to win trips to Cancun. Listen to Jon and Bret's "Spanish Word of the Day" on FM-103.5 and then be caller No. 10 to qualify.

—Another of the more obscure radio/Internet shows is the "The Free Capitalist Show With Rick Koerber." It airs on KTKK radio (AM-630), weekdays, 9-11 a.m., and again from 5-7 p.m. The show's aim is the advancement of freedom, prosperity and peace. The show can also be accessed at: www.freecapitalist.com.
