Today on TV

MWC women's basketball tournament (The mtn.): BYU vs. New Mexico (2:30 p.m.); Utah vs. UNLV or Colorado State (5 p.m.); TCU vs. Air Force (8:30 p.m.); San Diego State vs. Wyoming (11 p.m.)

NBA (6 p.m., Ch. 14): Jazz at Bucks

American Idol (8 p.m., Ch. 13): One of the 12 finalists will be eliminated. According to the latest tvguide.com online poll (which, of course, has no real merit), Utahn David Archuleta is still the overwhelming favorite. He's got 40.4 percent of the TV Guide vote, while second-place Jason Castro got 13 percent.

Men in Trees (9 p.m., Ch. 4): Marin and Jack move in together and discover sharing space isn't all that easy.

Law & Order (9 p.m., Ch. 5): An investigation into dog-fighting turns into a murder case.

Top Chef (11 p.m., Bravo): A new season of one of TV's more entertaining reality/competition shows begins, and the action moves to Chicago.

South Park (11 p.m., Comedy Central): The 12th — that's right, 12th — season begins, and Cartman contracts an incurable disease.

Lewis Black's Root of All Evil (11:30 p.m., Comedy Central): To say this show isn't for everyone is an understatement. The premise is that two comedians debate which of two things are more evil. In tonight's debut, the two things fighting for evil supremacy are Oprah Winfrey and the Catholic Church. At the end, Black renders his verdict. There's not enough Black in this show — he's one of the funniest men on TV — and there's certain to be too much, um, irreverence for a lot of people. If you're easily, or even not-so-easily, offended, there's plenty to be offended about in Root of All Evil.
