BASEBALL: Dan Christensen tossed a complete game, five-hitter in Utah Valley's 4-1 win over BYU as the neighboring schools met at the River City Classic in Sacramento on Friday.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Utah Valley made a late push but it was too little too late as 33 turnovers did in the Wolverines in a 71-64 loss to Texas-Pan American at the Division I Independent Championships in Edinburg, Texas. On Friday, Utah Valley scored just 23 points over the final 28 minutes and lost 76-53 to CSU Bakersfield.
PLAYER OF YEAR: Robyn Fairbanks has been named the Division I Independent Women's Basketball Player of the Year for the second straight season in a vote by head coaches and sports information/media relations directors at nine Division I independent schools.
Wolverines head coach Cathy Nixon was named the Coach of the Year for the first time while Sandy Marvin earned first team honors alongside Fairbanks. Julie McMurray was named to the second team.
