High school wrestling: A look ahead

It would be easy to assume that when the wrestling season for 2009 concludes it will look similar to 2008. After all, in 2008 Viewmont won its fourth title in five years. Mountain Crest won its third consecutive title as did Millard, and Wasatch claimed its sixth title in a row and eighth in nine years. Only 1A had a newcomer to No. 1 as Duchesne got its first title in 27 years. But things may be more wide open next year than the status quo.

The 5A ranks do not have a dominant team returning. Viewmont will still probably be the team to beat strictly based on the year-in and year-out team depth and junior varsity program the Vikings sustain. But they certainly won't be an overwhelming favorite. Region 1 has dominated the sport this decade as Weber continues to boast a strong program, as does Davis and Layton.

The other schools that had some strong underclassmen perform at the state tournament and should look to challenge next season include Spanish Fork, Alta and Skyline.

Mountain Crest returns three of its five individual state champions from this season, and with the type of depth and program coach Davie Swensen has established, the Mustangs will probably be favored to claim a fourth straight title. Box Elder and Payson will both have something to say before handing over the trophy, however. Both the Bees and Lions had strong showings at the state meet and have plenty of their top wrestlers returning to make it a tough competition for anyone. Also watch out for Roy. The Royals have gone from cellar dwellars in region, to competitors at state.

The biggest change may come in 3A. Wasatch loses most of its "big studs." Delta gave the Wasps a run for their money until the 189-pound final this season, and while the Wasps graduate most of their point-earners, the Rabbits have most of theirs back. Uintah will once again be in the mix with its strong tradition.

South Summit was young and stayed close to Millard, but don't expect the Eagles to give up their stranglehold on 2A just yet. Only three of the 27 wrestlers that qualified for state this year were seniors. They will be tough to unseat.

The refreshing uncertainty of 1A is always a pleasure to witness. Wayne has been the most consistent performer and the Badgers do return quite a few state placers, but this is the most open classification year after year.
