Salt Lake City's new yard-waste recycling program gets under way Monday, diverting residents' grass clippings, trimmings, branches, bushes and other yard waste from the landfill into usable compost.
Residents who sign up for the program can place all of their yard waste into a tan, 90-gallon yard-waste container and roll it curbside to be emptied weekly on their scheduled garbage day. Salt Lake City delivers the yard waste to the Salt Lake Composting Facility, where it is turned into compost and made available for purchase.
The yard-waste recycling containers cost $3.50 per month.
The city also is offering 40-gallon and 60-gallon garbage containers for residents. Residents can downsize their current 90-gallon garbage containers and save money on their monthly sanitation fees. The 90-gallon garbage container costs $11.25 per month; the 60-gallon container is $9.25; and the 40-gallon container is $8.25.
