PROVO A man who police say may be responsible for a string of nearly 50 apartment burglaries in Provo was confronted but not caught early Monday morning, at least giving police a description of the brazen thief.
Just after 4 a.m., the man walked into an apartment near 695 N. 100 East in Provo where a female student was still up doing her homework, said Provo Police Capt. Cliff Argyle.
When she heard the man enter, she quickly asked who it was. The man said he was sorry and quickly left, Argyle said.
The woman didn't get a good look at the man's face but did see he was wearing a dark baseball cap and dark jacket.
She quickly called a male friend in the same complex who got dressed and came down to her apartment.
On his way, the friend saw the man trying the doorknob of another apartment, Argyle said.
The friend asked the man what he was doing, and he said he was visiting his girlfriend, then walked away, Argyle said.
The woman and her male friend described the man as a white male, 25 to 30 years old, about 6 feet tall, around 200 pounds with an athletic build.
The man was wearing jeans and carrying a red bag.
Provo police ask anyone with information to call detective Bryan Soule at 801-852-6354 or police dispatch at 852-6210.
