PROVO The Brigham Young University lacrosse team beat Simon Fraser University 17-11 last Saturday in its home opener while improving to 2-2 on the season.
Winning at home has been key to the Cougars success in the past, and they hope to match last season's undefeated record in Provo.
"(Winning at home) is very important, we talked about it before the season starts," said head coach Jason Lamb. "We have goals for the team and one of the first goals is to do well on the road, and then to hold an undefeated record at home."
The Cougars have lost nearly half of their contributing players from last season's national championship team, but coach Lamb feels like certain aspects of this team are ahead of schedule.
"I did not think we would be scoring as much this year already," he said. "We usually start out pretty solid defensively and then work towards offense. Our defense is having more trouble then it usually does, but we will work on it and get better."
The Cougars are now preparing for what could be their biggest game this season against Michigan this Saturday at home.
"It is huge, (Michigan) is the biggest game, period," said Lamb. "We have had success against Michigan recently, but they are a quality team and one of the best coached teams we play."
BASEBALL: The Cougars won their season-opener at the University of Portland 4-2 last Friday night off the bat of sophomore outfielder Jonathan Cluff, who hit a two-out double to drive in the go-ahead run. Sophomore Bryce Ayoso then brought in Cluff to help pad the lead.
But on Saturday Portland fired back, winning both games Saturday by scores of 12-1 and 8-7.
SOFTBALL: BYU (9-5) lost its first two games in Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend but bounched back by beating Wagner and Virginia to close out the Tennessee Classic.
Senior first baseman Dani Snow led the Cougars Saturday as she went 2-for-3 with a two-run homerun and a double. Snow now has a 10-game hit streak.
Pitcher Christina Gwyn Trice (3-1) struck out 12 batters and only gave up four hits in another full game pitched.
TRACK AND FIELD: Several field athletes had a great showing last weekend at the Best Buy Wildcat Indoor Open in Ogden. Freshman thrower Krystle Forester won the shot put competition with a final throw of 43 feet 6 inches. On Saturday, pole-vaulter's Chris Little and Whitney Neves set national provisional marks by jumping 17 feet 5.5 inches and tying for first place in the event.
