Born: June 3, 1931, in Cuba's Oriente province, fourth of seven children.

Education: Attended Roman Catholic schools; studied administration at University of Havana.

Family: Married Vilma Espin, who died June 18, 2007. Four children, numerous grandchildren.

Career: Led 4,000 men against President Fulgencio Batista; named armed forces head after the revolution in 1959, deputy prime minister in 1962 and later first vice president; named Cuba's provisional president July 31, 2006; elected president Sunday.
