WEST VALLEY CITY Firefighters were called in to help contain a sulfuric acid spill Friday evening at the Coca-Cola plant, 2269 S. 3270 West.
Workers were trying to remove snow and ice from a sulfuric acid containment tank when a pipe came loose and spilled as much as 150 gallons of the highly corrosive chemical, said Kris Romijn, West Valley City's assistant fire chief.
Employees at the plant were evacuated, and no one was injured, Romijn said.
"We were very fortunate," he said. "We were able to isolate (the spill) and prevent it from leaking any farther into the plant."
The production side of the plant was shut down Friday night while crews cleaned up the spill. The warehouse side of the plant, however, remained open, Romijn said.
