Draper City Council resolution

"The Draper City Council asks the State of Utah to reassess the health, safety and welfare costs of operating a correctional facility in a highly populated area which continues to experience unprecedented growth. Moreover, Draper City maintains that the opportunity costs associated with not moving the Draper facility to a new site far exceed the benefits of maintaining the current location.

"Furthermore, the Council believes that given its unique location characteristics, a more appropriate use of the site is for a future state university campus, the USTAR campus and other research-driven projects coupled with support commercial, industrial and residential development. We recommend the state set aside 250 to 350 acres of land area for a future state university campus as well as additional land of up to 100 acres for development of the USTAR campus and other research-driven projects. The remaining 340 to 390 acres could be utilized for meeting regional commercial and residential needs.

"Furthermore, the Council supports construction of a commuter rail station along the borders or on part of the prison city by the Utah Transit Authority. This would be consistent with long-range planning for future land use of the prison site for a state university and support commercial and residential uses."

(Salt Lake County Council member Jeff Allen said the county resolution concerning the prison relocation is very nearly identical to the Draper city resolution.)
