Police in Brigham City have shot a robbery suspect they said was firing an AK-47 outside city hall.
About five Brigham City police officers and Box Elder County Sheriff's deputies responded to a parking lot outside the city government building around 12:26 a.m. Tuesday, after receiving a 911 call that someone was firing shots. The Brigham City Police Department is nearby.
There, police said the officers saw Matthew I. Jaramillo, 32, firing the semi-automatic weapon into the air. The officers told him to drop the gun, said Brigham City Police Lt. Mike Nelsen.
"He was yelling back, and they couldn't understand him," Nelsen said Tuesday.
Police said Jaramillo pointed the AK-47 at a Brigham City police officer and was shot by a Box Elder County Sheriff's deputy three times.
Jaramillo was taken to Ogden's McKay-Dee Hospital where he was listed in serious condition, Nelsen said. Officers plan to question him Wednesday.
The Box Elder County Sheriff's deputy who shot him is on administrative leave pending a pair of investigations into the shooting. Police said they were still trying to determine why Jaramillo would be firing an AK-47 outside city hall in the middle of the night.
Nelsen said detectives talked to Jaramillo on Monday in an attempt to convince him to surrender.
"He was not acting rational then," he said. "From all indications he was upset at the police because we were trying to find him."
Jaramillo was wanted in the Feb. 9 robbery of a check-cashing business on Brigham City's Main Street. Police said he entered the "Money Bags" store, jumped over the counter and held a knife to the clerk. After getting about $5,000 in cash, police said he hog-tied the woman in a back room. She was eventually able to free herself and call for help.
