SOFTBALL: The Utah women's softball team closed out the Red Desert Classic with a 6-0 win Sunday over Northern Colorado to end the St. George tournament with a 5-0 record. The Utes scored four runs in the first inning. Kristie Keller led things off with a double, while Staci Hemingway, Devina Quintero and Hailey Davenport each had hits and scored in the inning. Keller went 2-for-4 in the contest with two doubles and an RBI. In addition, Kelly Matthews had three stolen bases. Utah returns to action Friday at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., against Notre Dame.

TRACK: BYU distance runners Carolyn Quebe and Laura Taylor provided a 1-2 punch for the Cougars at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. Quebe, a junior, ran the mile in 4:54.32, and senior Taylor ran in the same heat with a time of 4:56.83. Quebe and Taylor finished in first and second, respectively, in the college heat. Also competing well for the women were sophomore Angela Wagner and freshman Katie Palmer. Wagner came in sixth in the championship heat of the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:35.32, one second off her personal best, and Palmer finished eighth in the championship heat of the 800 meters. The women's 4x400 team finished third in its section of 10 teams with a season-best time of 3:52.44.
