Three out-of-state players are Erika James from Montpelier, Idaho (Bear Lake H.S.), along with Hayley Atiyeh (Bishop Gorman H.S.) and Jordyn McDonald (A-Tech H.S.), who both hail from Las Vegas. Two other local Utah players committing to SLCC for the 2008-09 season are Randee O'Brien (Weber) and Meranda Wood (Hunter).

Salt Lake Community College also announced the verbal commitment of SLCC player Tara Bendt to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: The BYU women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 match to No. 19 Notre Dame on Tuesday. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 2-5 on the season.

MEN'S TENNIS: The BYU men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season, a 7-0 sweep by Stanford on Friday. With the loss in Palo Alto, Calif., BYU falls to 3-1 on the season. BYU takes on Santa Clara at noon today.

ACADEMICS: BYU student-athletes were recognized for their academic success this week as a total of 74 Cougars were named to the 2007 Fall Academic All-Mountain West Conference Team. BYU led other MWC schools by a significant margin, naming 21 student-athletes more than the second-highest institution. New Mexico followed the Cougars with 53 students, then Utah (47), UNLV (43), TCU (42), Air Force (34), Wyoming (34), Colorado State (26) and San Diego State (26).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Utah Valley junior Robyn Fairbanks has earned ESPN the Magazine Academic All District VIII Second Team honors as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Fairbanks, who is fourth nationally with an average of 24.3 points per game, is the lone player from the state of Utah on the first, second or third teams.

WOMEN'S TENNIS: Utah State's women's tennis team came out victorious Wednesday against the Idaho State Bengals in a 6-1 match. The Aggies improve to 2-1 on the season only losing to nationally ranked BYU.

SKIING: The University of Utah finished day one at the New Mexico Invitational in sixth place. Several of the Utes' top skiers did not make the trip, opting to rest up for the NCAA West Regional Feb. 22-23 in Bozeman, Mont. In alpine, Scott Veenis finished sixth in the GS, earning 25 points, while Hermann Lager finished 12th, adding 19 points. In the women's giant slalom, Eva Huckova racked up 23 points with her 11th-place finish, and Chirine Njeim finished 13th, posting 21 points. In Nordic competition Sarah MacCarthy led the team, finishing fifth in the 5K Classic for 26 points. Casey Simons was 12th in the 10K Classic, coming away with 21 points.
