I would like to register my concern at plans to drill for oil in the vicinity of Spiral Jetty on the Great Salt Lake. This earthen artwork is one of the most important artworks of the post-war period. I worry that the government of Utah and the oil extraction company are setting themselves up for a future embarrassment that will be to the detriment of the people of the state of Utah.
Imagine four years from now as environmental issues hit an all time high we get a picture of an oil well poked in the eye of the American Mona Lisa. Like the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower or the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Spiral Jetty is a large outdoor icon that represents America to the world.
Please don't let this potential icon of the desecration of culture and nature become the icon of the fine citizens and state of Utah.
