Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama canceled a planned Saturday appearance in Utah in deference to funeral services being held that day for the late LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley.
Instead, Obama's campaign announced Tuesday that his wife, Michelle, will visit Utah on Monday. Utah's presidential primary is Tuesday, the same day that voters in more than 20 other states go to the polls.
No details have been released about Michelle Obama's Utah visit. Her husband, who was to have held a rally in Salt Lake City, is now scheduled to travel to Idaho for an event in Boise on Saturday.
"Last night, I spoke with President Thomas Monson and I expressed my deepest sympathies to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on the passing of President Gordon B. Hinckley," Obama said in a statement.
Obama has already campaigned in Utah, attracting hundreds of people last August to a hastily organized rally in a parking lot off I-80. Afterward, Obama went to Park City, where he collected some $250,000 at a private fundraising event.
