Seth Lovell

Payson Lions

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior

Position: Center

The numbers: The Lions got off to a rugged start this season, but then they won four of five league games to jump into a tie for second in Region 7. In two impressive wins last week, one on the road at Orem and one at home against Timpview, Lovell scored 28 points in each. He is averaging just below 28 points per game in Payson's four league wins. For the season, the 6-foot-7 post player is averaging 21.6 points per game, which is tops among all 4A boys basketball players.

Kimberly Welch

Lone Peak Knights

Sport: Swimming

Class: Sophomore

Events: Sprints

The numbers: The Knights took home the Region 4 swim title last week, and the efforts of Welch had a lot to do with it. She won two events — the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly — and also swam a leg on two winning relay teams. She is currently ranked as the No. 4 overall swimmer in 5A. She has the state's fastest time in the 100-yard fly and the second fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle and is ranked in the top seven in four other events.
