WEST POINT — A second candidate from West Point has announced he is seeking a seat on the Davis County Commission.

John Petroff Jr., West Point's current mayor, announced Friday that he will seek the Davis County Commission seat that is expected to be vacated by current Commissioner Alan Hansen at the end of the year.

Randy Minson, a 41-year-old communications consultant from West Point, has already announced he will be seeking Hansen's seat on the commission.

"I firmly believe that the key to our success as a county rests on the ability of the commission to cultivate and maintain solid, productive relationships with a number of key groups," said Petroff.

He emphasized the importance of supporting ongoing growth and development of Hill Air Force Base, promoting job creation through interlocal cooperatives such as the Davis Technology and Economic Cooperative, continuing to work with the state to improve transportation and maintaining a close working relationship with Davis School District.

"We have to realize that none of us live in a vacuum," said Petroff. "The commission must be able to work with a variety of groups to elevate quality of life in our county."

Petroff said one of the most valuable things he takes away from his experiences as mayor and as a member of the Council of Governments is his very solid working relationships with Davis mayors.

For the past 27 years he has been the proprietor of JP's American Car Care Center and an active member of the Davis Chamber of Commerce, where he has also served as a board member. Petroff currently sits on the North Davis Sewer Board and the North Davis Fire Board.
