Sen. Howard Stephenson of Draper has sponsored SB0045, Accounting for Competitive Activities of Local Entities. This bill sets up a committee that could force city-, county- or state-owned golf courses, recreation and fitness centers, swimming pools and anything that competes with private businesses to lose public funding or close.
This bill would take away reasonably priced recreational activities from the general public. Many seniors, singles and families, who pay for these activities at affordable prices, would no longer be able to golf, swim or use the fitness centers in the private sector.
What comes next? Will the county library system close because it competes with bookstores?
This bill tries to fix something that isn't broken. Thousands of people benefit from the programs offered by city, county and state. Please do not allow this bill to become law.
