A 2-year-old girl whose severe injuries led to nine counts of felony child abuse against her mother and the mother's boyfriend was released from Primary Children's Medical Center Thursday, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak.

The girl, identified only as "M.M." in court documents, was released to her father after 10 days of hospital treatment. Not yet available is information about the level of recovery the girl can expect, Jaroscak said. Doctors who examined her early on said chemical burns could threaten her eyesight. She also suffered 12 broken bones in her hands, lost teeth, lost patches of hair and other injuries.

Amy Ellene Roberts, 30, and boyfriend Derrick Lee Crispin, 29, remain in the Salt Lake County Jail on felony child abuse and felony obstructing justice charges. Bail is set at $150,007 each.

Roberts took M.M. to St. Mark's Hospital about 1 a.m. Jan. 8 where staff then transferred the child to Primary. Officers arrested Roberts after questioning her and then went to the couple's condo, where they questioned Crispin and then arrested him.

Charging documents say officers executing a search warrant of the couple's condo, near 3900 South and 800 East, found a garbage bag in a Dumpster that contained a syringe, bloody tissues and other items officers believe are connected with "the infliction or cleanup of M.M.'s injuries."

Roberts also had a 9-year-old boy at the condo. He showed no obvious signs of injury but was taken into protective custody.
