Bonnie: Quaker has a new instant hot cereal that I can actually recommend. Simple Harvest instant cereal blends together whole-grain rolled oats, wheat, barley and rye, and it is sweetened with sugar (not high-fructose corn syrup), molasses and dried fruits. It's a bit sweet for me but otherwise quite nutritious.
One packet provides about 160 calories, 1.5 to 3.5 grams of fat (the higher amounts from the good-for-you nuts), a decent 4 grams of fiber (including 1 gram of soluble fiber) and 1 serving of whole grains per packet. Way to go, Quaker!
Carolyn: Simple Harvest hot cereals are simple in a Real Simple magazine way. The simple in both names does not mean cheap or plain but rather a kind of upscale style that includes natural ingredients such as this cereal's whole grains and nuts. But this new "simple" cereal is also packed in partly clear plastic envelopes rather than the simple brown-paper kind Quaker uses for its oatmeal. (A Quaker spokesman says the new packets give consumers a sneak peek at all the good stuff they're about to eat.)
In terms of taste, these also aren't really simple as much as indulgent, with all those premium ingredients especially those nuts making up for the inferior taste of the wheat, barley and rye when compared with the taste of oatmeal.
In short, these are the hot cereal equivalent of Post Selects Great Grains cold cereals and so delicious that I'd be more than happy to be served them at a $300-a-night bed and breakfast.Guiltless Gourmet Baked Tortilla Chips. Bonnie: It's hard to believe that it's been almost 20 years since we reviewed Guiltless Gourmet's baked tortilla chips. I've always liked that this is an all-natural line, meaning it contains no preservatives or artificial ingredients. And nutritionally, these are good compared with other chips, especially in terms of fiber, sodium and fat.
