PROVO — Brigham Young University is mourning today the death of 24-year-old student Rebecca Blazzard, who was hit and killed by a car Monday evening.

Flags on campus will fly at half-mast the day of Blazzard's funeral, which will be announced soon, according to BYU public relations officials.

Blazzard is from La Grange, Calif., but was living in Provo while she attended BYU.

She was a visual arts major with an emphasis in art history, BYU officials said.

"We are all deeply saddened by this accident and the passing of one of our students. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends," said BYU spokeswoman Carri Jenkins.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident is George Bloch, 66, of Park City, according to police.

The investigation into the traffic accident is ongoing.

The incident occurred on University Avenue at 1820 North at about 5:30 p.m., according to police.

Provo Police Capt. Cliff Argyle released a statement this morning reminding drivers to be vigilant in their observation of pedestrians, especially in the area of marked and unmarked crosswalks.

"We would also like to remind pedestrians to take extra care when crossing a roadway in a crosswalk. When possible make eye contact with the driver, make sure the vehicle is stopped before proceeding into the roadway," Argyle stated.
