In letter after letter, I have read how plans for universal health care add up to a kind of "socialized medicine." But the reality is a form of socialized medicine already exists in America: Medicare. Socialized medicine really works. The evidence couldn't be clearer. Socialized medicine in the United States delivers far better health care at lower cost and with far fewer restrictions and bureaucracy. The burden of proof is on health insurance companies. Why should a corporate entity profit from your health care? Why should decisions about your medical treatment be made by a corporate manager who may even personally profit from denying you benefits? Why shouldn't we simply expand Medicare to cover all Americans? We could easily pay for socialized medicine. We already know the result. It's better. It works.
